Jozani Forest National Park

The Jozani Forest is part of the recently declared Jozani Forest National Park, located 35 kilometres southeast of Stone Town between the bays of Chwaka and Uzi.

The Jozani Forest is the last remnant of original, untouched forest on the island. The forest is well known for its Zanzibar red colobus, a very rare monkey species unique to Zanzibar. Over the last years their population grew from 1,500 to about 2,500 individuals. The not so easy to spot monkey spends most of its time in the trees and feeds mainly on leafs.

Other animal species which can be observed in the forest are Bushbabies, Sykes' monkeys, Tree hyraxes and the small antelope Ader's duiker. Over 50 species of butterflies and about 40 species of birds add colour and sound to the forest. Jozani Forest was the main habitat of the Zanzibar leopard, which unfortunately is believed to be extinct.

The forest is divided by a road into two sections. To protect the wildlife it is not permitted to walk off the road without an official guide. A network of various nature trails leads visitors through the forest. The main trail begins at the park entrance and takes about an hour at a leisurely stroll. A mangrove boardwalk gives visitors the possibility to have a view into the special mangrove habitat.

The park is open daily from 7:30am to 5pm throughout the year. During the primary rain season between March and June the forest paths may be flooded. The entrance fee of USD 8 includes a guide. An information leaflet about the flora and fauna of the park can be obtained at the entrance.
