Zanzibar Facts
Zanzibar is a separate state within Tanzania, located in the Indian Ocean 37 kilometres
offshore the east coast of Africa. Zanzibar consists of Zanzibar Island, also known as
Unguja Island, Pemba Island and many smaller islets. The two main islands are
flat without any hills and the coasts are dominated by sandy beaches, rocky bays,
beautiful lagoons and mangrove swamps. The islands are surrounded by coral reefs.
The capital as well as the largest settlement of Zanzibar is Zanzibar Town. Most inhabitants
live in small villages around the island and earn their living by fishing and agriculture.
A shallow channel separates Zanzibar Island from the mainland. The 85 kilometres long
and between 20 and 30 kilometres wide island has much to offer: Stone Town with its
ancient buildings gives an insight into the past times of the island; sandy beaches
and coral reefs invite for swimming, snorkelling, diving and game fishing; tours to
the many spice plantations; swimming with dolphins at Kizimkazi or with giant sea turtles
at Nungwi; observing the Red colobus monkeys at Jozani Forest and much more.
Located near to the equator, Zanzibar experiences ideal weather conditions throughout
the year. The average temperature during the summer (December) is 30°C and during the
winter (June) about 25°C. Short rains occur in November, whilst the main rain season
lasts from April to May.
