Palace Museum

The Palace Museum (Beit-al-Sahel) is located on the harbour road overlooking the sea near the House of Wonders and Forodhani Gardens.

Built in the 1890's, this large white building with castellated battlements originally served as a home for members of the sultan's family. From 1911 until 1964 the palace was the official residence of the Sultan of Zanzibar. After the 1964 Revolution, when the dynasty was overthrown, the name changed from Sultan's Palace to People's Palace. In the following years the building housed offices for the government. In 1994 a museum dedicated to the history of Zanzibar's sultans opened in the palace, which was thereafter renamed to Palace Museum.

An exhibition explains the early days of the sultanate as well as its commercial treaties between Zanzibar, America, Britain and France between 1828 and 1870. One room shows memorabilia of Princess Salme, whose father was the first Sultan of Zanzibar and mother a slave. Another exhibition concentrates on the time period between 1870 and 1896 and the change of life following the introduction of water pipes and electricity. In the palace garden, outside the museum, are graves of some of the early sultans.

The museum is open daily from 9am to 6pm. The entrance fee is USD 3 per person. Against a small fee guides can show visitors around.
