The Sandbank

For those who cannot last the day without a beach, a visit to one of the amazing sandbanks directly in front of the Africa House makes a memorable experience while staying in Stone Town.

There are two sandbanks located approximately one kilometre offshore Africa House. As the tide washes any debris away on a daily basis, the turquoise water of the warm ocean is ultra clear. During high tide, both sandbanks are submerged. During low tide, either sandbank makes a perfect snorkelling and picnic location or for simply laying in the sand, listening to the sound of the waves while getting lost in your own thoughts.

An approximately 10-minute boat ride with a motorised wooden boat named Jambo offers up to 10 visitors a safe trip. An early departure is recommended as the sun can get very strong. The inner-sandbank is the larger of the two sandbanks and usually attracts more visitors and footsteps as the day goes by, while the smaller outer sandbank will likely remain empty all day.

Contact the tour operator at the Africa House for a reservation and individual price, which depends on the number of visitors and time spent. Additionally, the Africa House can prepare a picnic lunch or breakfast and can even help organise a romantic sandbank wedding ceremony.
