The Old Customs House
The Old Customs House is located at the main seafront on Mizingani Road near
The Old Dispensary in Stone
Town.
In 1865 the building was constructed as the home for Zam Zam, a daughter of the
first Sultan of Zanzibar, and her husband Sayyid Humud bin Ahmed of the Busaidy
family. After the death of bin Ahmed just a few years later, Zam Zam moved out
of the house and left it in the hands of the relatives of her late husband. The
house is made of coral and lime stone and its plain facade is of typical Arabic
style. The house features many beautifully carved wooden doors, decorated with
fish, lotus and anchor chain motifs. According to an inscribed date, the main
door is believed to be the second oldest door in Stone Town. The balcony with
four iron pillars supporting the two verandahs has been constructed at a later time.
In 1928, the customs authority moved from the Forodhani area to the new port area
and the family house served as the new Custom House until 1987. Due to poor
maintenance the house had to be evacuated and was taken over by squatters. In 1993
a programme for the renovation of the Old Custom House was initiated, with help
and fundraising from the Italian government, UNESCO, The Aga Khan Cultural Services
and the Embassy of Sweden. Since 2002 the building is used as the Zanzibar Conservation Centre
including an exhibition about the history of Stone Town. The upper floor is used by the
Dhow Countries Music Academy.
